Finish levels, in plain terms

A wall that looks fine under a lamp can look terrible under a window. That is almost always a finish level question, and it is cheaper to settle it on paper. Sanding is where the level gets earned.

LEVEL 0

No finish

Temporary construction, or where the final decoration is undetermined.

LEVEL 1

Joints taped

Concealed spaces above ceilings, plenums, attics.

LEVEL 2

One coat over tape

Substrate for tile, or garages and warehouses where appearance is not a concern.

LEVEL 3

Two coats

Heavy texture before painting. Not for smooth-painted walls.

LEVEL 4

Three coats

The common level under flat paint, light texture and most wall coverings.

LEVEL 5

Skim coat

Gloss, semi-gloss or enamel paint, and anywhere severe lighting will rake across the wall.
